Out of may softwares I use cutepdf converter (a freeware)to convert word/excel or any printable file to a PDF file. You may get this software from www.cutepdf.com

Wword files can be converted to html format by using save as option under file. But I have not used with math symbols.

you may need some word to pdf converters, such as simpo word to pdf, this is what i know quite well. if you wish ,you can try. this can help you to convert word into pdf files. http://www.simpopdf.com/word-to-pdf.html

You may try OpenOffice, which is an open source alternative of MS Office Suite.

This suite contains standard an option to convert any file into a pdf-file.

See for more info on <a href="http://www.openoffice.org/" title="http://www.openoffice.org/" target="_blank">http://www.openoffice.org/</a>
