Controlling JDE app outage times during CL reorg
We currently run a weekly reorg controlled by a CL program. Until recently we had a four hour window and are now looking to do the reorgs with the smallest possible JDE application outage. Any recommendations?

Answer Wiki:
First let me say that I know absolutely nothing about JDE. With that in mind, let me ask this question. Why are you doing the reorg in the first place? I remember doing them on the System/38 back in the late 80’s but have not done one on the as/400/iSeries/i5 since I started on it in 1990. Is this a JDE requirement? Since the time needed will be directly proportional to the size of the file and the config of the machine, my recommendation would be to examine the files in the job stream and only reorg those that were absolutely necessary.

With our ERP software (iVP ERP from Solarsoft) we write new records to the end of the file instead of using the space created from deleted record. We do this for Support reasons (New records are at the end of the file so easy to find.). Our software has a utility to reorg the databases including an option that sorts them by the total size of deleted records. This way you can reorg just the worst files to quickly gain back the most free space. We recomend the customers run this once a month. If JDE doesn’t have a option like this Teandy is right, you can create your own. Let us know if you need help for this…
