Connecting to VMWare console from ESX

I was trying to connect the vmware serial console from my esx host.
Steps I followed:
Made the changes into the virtual machine properties. 
      serialport 1: use named pipe 
      pipe name : /vmfs/volumes/Storage1/vm1/pipe1 
      near end : server 
      far end : the virtual machine
issue: the pip1 socket file is not getting created hence I am not able to 
talk to the socket pipe1 through socat command.
Any suggestions would be highly appreciated!
