Connecting patch panel to a switch or individual workstation

Our office space is spread out between two buildings and we have placed multiple IDFs/distribution frames so that each individual workstation can run a cable through the patch panels that are linked to the main switch that is connected to the router.
My question: Can we just connect the individual workstations first to a nearby switch (per table), which is then connected to the patch panel/IDF? (as opposed to running a long cable from each individual workstation to the IDF as this would entail a lot of wiring vs one long wiring to the switch per table and each workstation connects there).

You can if you wish. Whenever I've had the opportunity, I've always put a switch for my workstation to connect to. Cheap enough, and it makes it much easier to move other equipment (usually temporary) in and out. For many users, though, it's possibly just extra unnecessary hardware.
