There is no need to create a remote output queue if you are just adding a laser printer. We only create remote output queues if we add a line printer or a thermal printer. For a laser printer, use the CRTDEVPRT command. Most of our printers have IPDS, so that’s what we use for the Type, otherwise it’s 3812. Obviously the LAN attachment is *IP. For an IBM printer, we use Port number 5001, for HP it’s 9100. Other details should be in that IBM document.

There are dozens of HP printers attached to our AS/400 over a TCP/IP network. In most cases they use a remote output queue, which works very well. Once in a while we find a printer (HP LJ 1505n, for example) that requires a device description. These printers handle regular spool files as well as forms with electronic overlays just fine using a remote output queue.
If you like, I’ll send one of our configs - just post an e-mail address.
