If speed is not a key issue, then build your boot environment on a CD, and set the machine to boot from that.

Kinkos and other places do something similar with their rental machines - although as I recall, they forcibly re-image their machines every night from a network based standard image.

Try googling for configuration control or configuration reset. I did a quick check and got several responses that looked relevant at first glance.

If I understand your question and if you OS is Windows XP, then I suggest you take a serious look at the free Microsoft XP Shared Computer ToolKit.

Hi -

When I was working for a local government we used a product called Deep freeze (http://faronics.com/index.asp) It locks the systems down but still enables you to unlock (with the password) and make changes. We used it on public computers and workstations to prevent people from deleting icons, changing desktop pictures etc. Worked really well. The system can also be configured to unlock at specified times to update anti virus software and the such, then autolock again. It’s pretty cool software.
