There are no apparent virus on this computer. I can open word, picture, excel, work on the document without a problem. But when I go to save as, and click on the drop down arrow to change the file location, the computer locks up? Any ideas? Thank you in advance for your time and efforts!

You failed to specify operating system or network.
BUT, since you said ‘change location for the save’ I am guessing windows on a network. And your problem is not uncommon. There is an unreachable resource. When you do ‘Save As’ and try to change location, ‘Windows’ tries to verify (access) every local and network share to build the list you ask for. Any server that had been mapped and is now offline, any network printer that is now offline, and peer2peer share if you are in a workgroup, not domain, and any FTP site that you saved as a network place. You imply that this is the only system having this problem. Check network places, printers, mapped drives, network shares, and ‘Hosts/LMHosts’ files. If it hangs when trying to open ‘My Computer’ or Windows Explorer try ‘safe boot’ and various local folders. Good Luck.

To add to Howard2nd's response, I've come across similar situations plenty of times and 99% of the time it's either a bad NIC card or the wrong NIC drivers. Good luck.

Thank you for such a quick reply. I will check all of these but do you have any other ideas? IF I remember correctly My computer is not affected. The nic has been and is still working w/o a problem. I can get to the network, internet, etc. The OS is XP. Again Thank you VERY MUCH for your help I will let you know either way if these suggestions work or not. But I may be back asking for more ideas :) Thanks again! Cheers

Sometimes when you have a group policy affecting whether users can view or access the drive where the program defaults to you get hanging errors.
