My question I have this laptop, replaced the harddrive,system now powers up and shuts down after approximately 15-20 seconds, did manage to get into set up for a few seconds, any suggestions. thanks

We had a couple of these that the HD went bad because of overheating. the issue was that the cpu fan was flaky and causing the entire system to overheat. check that and if so you can get one off the internet. Just google for compaq laptop cpu fan. you can check at places like <a href=”sparepartswarehouse.com”>sparepartswarehouse.com</a>, etc.

    This particular notebook is subject to two issues: a power / power supply issue (not sure which internal component specifically) and a CPU capacitor issue. Both will cause the symptom you describe. If replacing the CPU fan does not resolve the problem (and to my experience it will not - I have one of these puppies at home with the same issue), an new system board / motherboard is needed. Expect to pay something in the area of USD90.00 - 150.00 (or equivalent) for the part.
