Check into VLAN tagging. The standard is 802.1 Q. I believe both switches support it.

s't possible to create VLAN's and communicate between them in a network were the backbone switch is cisco 6509, and the edge switches are 3com (stack switch 4400) VTP has nothing to do with communication between VLANs, that just trunks VLANs together so they can all enter/exit the designated trunk port. For inter-VLAN comms you need routing and all layer 3 switches will do that. It sounds like the VLANs you've created on the 3Coms are 802.1Q and the one on the Cisco is ISL, which is Cisco-specific. First make sure all VLANs on all switches are using the same VLAN protocol, and then enable routing between the VLANs so packets from a node on one VLAN can get to the nodes it needs to if they're on different VLANs (e.g., an end-user VLAN and a server-only VLAN). Cisco has wonderful documentation on this, and it's easy to find. Good luck!
