I had the same problem when I installed a brand new hard drive on one of my WInXP SP3 32 bit PCs, it would run chkdsk EVERY TIME at boot up, making the boot time rediculous. I had trouble getting it to stop for a while till I finally removed the instruction to run chkdsk from the boot sequence. I figure IF the drive actually had a problem, it would reload the necessity for chkdsk subsequent to my telling it not to, and it has not done that and has run excellently since that time
