I have Exchange 2003 with Outlook 2007. I have several users who have left the company. If I delete the user in AD, is the mailbox and it contents automatically deleted? If the user is disabled, I don't think the mailbox is deleted, but how would I get in there to delete out email? What is the best way to handle this? If nothing else mailboxes that still exist will accumulate junk mail.

Software/Hardware used:
Exchange 2003, Outlook 2007

Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.

Your Exchange server has a retention period of 30 days by default. Once you delete the account in AD the mailbox is disconnected but not deleted until 30 days later. You can manually purge them from Exchange using Exchange System Manager or just let them expire. When they are disconnected they are no longer active and will no longer receive mail. You can re-enable the AD account and reattach the mailbox within the next 30 days if needed.
