Cisco 3500 Switch How to configure

I've been given a Cisco 3500 XL Switch. Question is what can i do with it? I was hoping to split the ports into VLAN's for a start preparing for CCNA exams. Up to now I've mainly done book work. I want to get my 'hands dirty'. Is this a manageble switch ...? - i dont know. I've tried Consoling into it..using 'PUTTY' . 'sh and en (show and enable )doesnt work' . config so far: I've been given a Cisco 3500 XL config. Question is what ca i do with it? Switches are 2 types,manageable&un-manageable.In manageable switch,switch is assigned with IP address and is more relaible.Coming to un-manageable switch no ip is assigned and life time is low compared to manageable switch.In manageable switches you can create VLANS,but this is not possible in un-manageable switches.
Examples of manageable switches are Cisco 2950,2960,3550&3750 and so on.........
Examples of un-manageable switches are D-link switches with 8 ports&12 ports.
You can login to switch through hyperterminal by connecting a console cable to console port of a switch instead of Putty.Putty is a software used in many corporates,definetely show and enable command works,I think you might had given a enable password to enter into a previleged level of a switch,if you had forgot a enable password,break the password of a switch and try..........

This is the same via Putty or Hyptertrm.
…then… instead of switch:

The commands you are entering looks like the ones you would do at the rommon screen to do a password recovery or something else. The switch seems to boot up correctly since you are getting the “switch:” prompt. Can you show us what happens when you type “enable”? Does it give you an error or anything? Your prompt should change to “switch#” to configure your switch.

rightio, by hook or by crook I’ved/loaded a file for my switch from Cisco…. It is in the form of something called .tar file. Which hopefully I’ve extracted correctly to a .bin file (?). Now I’d appreciate help in ‘flashing’ it to the switch from my laptop.?
