Intel i7's are not on the VMWare HCL for Esx. I tried installing esxi on my i7 machine and encountered errors during installation. However, if you plan to use Workstation for whatever reason, i7 will work great.

I think it is back to xeon for VM’s as i7 is more for desktops/laptops.
