How do I check for errors after modifying a CL?

Answer Wiki

Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.

Do not just test for the changes you put in the program and prove they worked. Test with different scenarios that should cause errors and make sure they do that. Do full regression testing. Does this change have any effect on other programs?

Bottom line is you go through the full QA process as you should for any changes going into production.

For compiler errors, you check the compiler listing. For logic errors, you call the program and watch it run; best would be running it under debug. Some clarification of what you actually need could be helpful to us. Tom

...compile with option *debug then STRISDB   The CL program should be compiled as ILE CL with option DBGVIEW(*ALL), not with "option *debug; and the STRDBG command should be used, not STRISDB... unless you have an AS/400 that hasn't had an OS upgrade in the last 15-20 years.   Tom

Yes, with OPM CL you can use STRISDB. You just shouldn't use it. I said "should" for definite reasons.   STRDBG also works with OPM CL and allows features such as stepping into sub-programs which can't be done with STRISDB.   Nor should you compile as OPM CL; ILE CL provides numerous advantages including the the fundamental advantage of better performance. As developers on our employers' systems, basic elements such as performance to get best use of equipment should be part of our professional responsibilities.   And there was no specific mention of OPM CL until after the mention of STRISDB and "option *debug". There is no reason nowadays to think first of OPM CL at all, and as professionals we shouldn't. It has no purpose today and hasn't had one for many years.   Tom
