Changing from ABAP to BW is not that really hard..I don't know but I never really had a hard time transitioning.. ABAP skills that you basically need for BW is data retrieval from the different SAP tables..you might also need to do some conversion processing prior to loading these data to your PSA/ODS/Infocubes...Good luck! BW is fun! :)

I don't know if there's any particular prerequisite that I would consider as most important. You can shift to BIW coming from either an ABAP background or functional consultant. The advantages of the ABAP background is you would find it easier to understand the technical aspects of BIW, such as when you need to create additional transfer structures or if you need to program any conversion routines for the data being uploaded, as well as being familiar with the source tables from SAP R/3. The advantage of coming from a functional consultant background is the knowledge of the business process. This is important when you're modelling new infocubes. You should be familiar with what kind of data/information your user needs and how they want to view/group the data together.

Hi, Moving into BW arena is more than just understanding both ABAP and the knowledge of Business Processes. You will need to understand the aspects of effeicient Data Modelling, Mapping Processes into the right type of Data Model and also being able to decide what is the most efficient way to manipulate/convert data when uploading with in BW. Never the less having ABAP knowledge is extremely helpful in many ways (like ErrorAnalysis/Debugger, Realisation of complex scenarios like n:m rekations in Data Model and Variables of Exit types). I hope i was able to help a little. regards Shah
