A 'file type' is a type of file. Generally the term implies setting a particular file extension for the file name. When you select the 'Open' function for a file, Windows can run a default program (that can be chosen) that it associates with the file extension. We could possibly say more if we knew what problem you are having. -- Tom

There's .exe, .dll, .tmp and so on. It's not real clear how you mean this...?

If you are trying to scan something, and being asked what type of file you would like it to be, it could be looking for something like .tiff, .jpg - but that question needs more details to make enough sense to help you with it.

Generally, after scanning any document, it identifies as .jpg/jpeg file like abcd.jpg (while abcd (and u can change as ur desire name) is file name and .jpg is extension of file type) that means, it is an image file and today almost all OS supports this file type. So, as per ur Q it is not necessary to ask "What is a file type for Windows 7".... simply keep ur doc on scanner or follow whatever mechanism of ur scanner and scan it, do locate the place i.e. where do u want to keep the scanned file in ur PC and proceed afterwards.
