“Can’t open file: fax.tif.” One user can not open fax attachment yet other users have no problem.
Small business server with Win XP clients with a domain. Currently three users for four PCs. User A cannot open a fax attachment in Outlook. Error message "can't create file: fax.tif. right click folder you want to create the file in and then check propertieson the shortcut menu to check your permissions for the folder." Faxes are stored on server and can be accessed by all users. Other users have no problem. Someone of the internet suggested a problem in the temp folders with too many fax.tif files in the OLKE folder. Tried cut and moving fax.tif files to another folder. Didn't solve problem. Checked permission for user and folders. Permissions for user a matched other users. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks

Answer Wiki:
I am not positive, but i would check in outlook express that it isnt blocking attachments first. Click on 'tools'>'options'>'security' if there is a check mark in the box that says 'Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus' uncheck it. But again I'm not sure if outlook is blocking it or if you just can't open it, but from your uestion it sounds like it might be from outlook express. Also in casr that isnt your problem, here is a link that will show you how to open a tif file. http://www.byui.edu/help/outlookhelp/mailing/tif.htm

I wonder if the place you are checking the permissions is on the folder where it resides on the network, when possibly the problem is with permissions on a SHORTCUT UserA has to that folder. Can UserA open the folder at all?

Thank You for your replies.

I found the solution through a google search.

Guys,

I had the same problem and found the quick fix. It seems Windows has a limitation on how many of the same named documents it can save in the folder Temporary Internet Files/OLKE. Example, lets your fax.tif. You open up 99 of these named files in your lifetime, but on the 100th one, you get the outlook error, this is b/c Windows can only save 99 of these and the 100th one errors. It looks like this in your OLKE folder, fax.tif(97), fax.tif(98) and fax.tif(99). You have to go in and delete these so names files and then outlook can then start opening up those named documents again. BTW you cant just find the folder OLKE, you need to open up an old attachment in outlook and click on save as. In the dropdown menu where it saves “saveastype”, choose the correct format, ie. .tif files so it will show all of the .tif files located in that folder. Then you have to one by one delete them or at least the ones named as the same file that you are trying to open. Hope this helps.

Resolution:
In the registry find the following key
HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftOffice11.0OutlookSecurity Value Name: OutlookSecureTempFolder Value Type: REG_SZ
Value Data: Temporary Internet Files

Copy the value to an explorer window, delete all files in the folder.
For Example: C:Documents and Settingsuser nameLOCAL SettingsTemporary Internet FilesOLK18F
