Were you possibly trying to change the machine name at the same time as adding it to the domain? That causes problems because XP will essentially register the computer with the security principals of the previous computer name, not of the newly changed name. A review of your logs would probably lead to the answer. Go to www.eventid.net to and enter any unusual errors to see if it likely caused the problem.

Is this WIN XP Professional?
If it is then the easy thing is to remove the laptop from the domain - by making it a member of a workgroup in the Network Setup. Then after it asks you for a usename and password authorized to remove and add computers and users to a domain it will remove the laptop from the domain and your laptop will be a member of the local workgroup. Of course it will ask you to reboot the laptop. After it reboots then go into the setup and then take it off the local workgroup and make the laptop a part of the domain again.
I have had the same problem many times before and this process always works.
Hope it helps you out.
Let us know what happens.
