Microsoft offers an “Autoplay Repair Wizard,” AutoFix.exe for Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP. I downloaded this file and installed it. Autoplay now functions normally. Thanks for your suggestions, anyhow, which I never really attempted.

I repeat: after a thorough cleaning with “Crap-Cleaner v1.28, Registry Cleaner v5.1,defragmenting and Windows Disk Cleanup,” the results were a failure in
the “Autoplay Selection and its Action Prompt.”
