 Can’t access resources on server after SP1

I have recently installed SP1 on a Windows Server 2003 which is also a DC for a remote location. SP1 installed OK and I have not doen any additional configuration through the Server Configuration Wizard utility. However, once the SP1 was installed, I am unable to connect to any of the shared files and folders on that server (the server is a DC and file server only). I can remotely connect to it, browse through its resources and users on the local LAN are able to access its resources. I use point-to-point VPN connection between sites through Windows' Routing and Remote Access. I'm sure that there is some kind of security tweak, but I have no idea where and what to look for. In the mean time, I've uninstalled the SP1 and all users can now access files and folders on that server. Any ideas are greatly appreciated. Lucian

When you install SP1 it installs a firewall. Allow the VPN Connection through the firewall.

I assumed that being able to remotely connect to the server (via Remote Desktop Connection)is enough of an indication that the firewall allows connections from other LANs…but I guess I was wrong…

I will reinstall the SP1 over the weekend and test connectivity again.

Doesn’t the firewall run only if ICS service is running? If I stop ICS services, I should have no issue with users from other LANs accessing shared resources on that server, right?

I reinstalled the SP1 over the weekend and…same issue. I can connect to it through Remote Desktop, but it doesn’t seem to be part of the network anymore. LAN users cannot connect to the shared resources on that server.
As per your suggestions, I tried to configure the firewall, but I get this message:
“Firewall cannot run because another program or service is running that might use the NAT component (Ipnat.sys)”

From what I read, many recommend to not install the SP1 on a server that is also a RRAS.

I am about to give up, as users connecting to that server is more important to me than the damn SP1.

Does anyone have other ideas I might try?

Maybe useful – check the if the DNS server is listed correctly.
