My boss recently bought a new computer. On my computer, I have my outlook account, which is connected to an exchange server, and my bosses email, for convenience. I bought Outlook 2013 at staples, and had a hard time installing the program. I called Microsoft, and the technician installed Outlook my bosses new desktop, but it wasn't on an exchange server- he installed it using IMAP. Now, the only emails that come up are emails from months ago. None of his new emails are coming through to the outlook on his new computer. I called Microsoft back, and was told my issue was because he was on IMAP when he needs to be connected to an exchange server. I have tried everything. I can't seem to figure this out and was told that I need to pay Microsoft to have a technician look into this. Does this problem seem easily solvable to anyone? PLEASE help.

IMAP is a way for Outlook to communicate with your Exchange server. IMAP is an e-mail communication protocol. The general alternatives are POP3 and MAPI, which would also communicate from Outlook with your Exchange server. IMAP, POP3 and MAPI can be compared to each other; but none of them can be thought of as alternatives to "Exchange". It doesn't make good sense to think about "IMAP or Exchange". . However, Microsoft does call MAPI by the name "Exchange ActiveSync", so maybe that's what was meant. . Does that sound like the situation you described? . Tom
