I have just formatted my hard drive and discovered that the Windows XP ID key can not be found. What do I do?

Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.

If this is an OEM version sold with an HP or Dell system you should have a sticker on the side of the machine with the key. If you use the cd provided with the computer it usually does not ask for it. If you installed a purchased version of XP then the key will be found on the envelope the cd came in.

If the top options are not available, then I would reach out the where you purchased the system from to possibly obtain that key.

And if neither of those options work. and you registered your copy of Windows, you MIGHT be able to contact MS, show proof you have the physical media, and be provided with your key. I cannot confirm for sure as I have never ran into this situation, but most other software providers work along those parameters so I can't imagine the largest one wouldn't also.
