I'm working in a financial company as a network engineer. We have XP Professional computers in all branches, in a workgroup connected via Cisco routers to head office. I want to block particular site for eg. https:://thornfruit.com, https://kproxy.com etc How can i block these sites in WinXP using regedit or Group Policy? Also, how can I monitor the size of files a user has downloaded on a particular computer in a day or week? Please help, thanks.

trying to block on each pc is going to be a nightmare of a management headache. you should look into an enterprise internet surfing control monitoring system like either surfcontrol, or an appliance such as secure computing’s SmartFilter.

you could also look at the Barracuda Networks Web Filter.

if your company can’t afford or won’t spend the money to get something like this then look into open source systems such as Untangle, (I have not used this but the site states that it is open source and free).

are there any other users out there that have experience with Untangle? or other free web filtering systems?

I bless the fact that my firewall would allow me to block specific sites.  They did it through the rules that are imbedded into it which I could modify.  It is possible, depending on the firewall to block sites on this level.  Some allow you do this and some don't.   Symantec's Software firewall allows you block sites on the firewall level and so do some of the others.  Some of the browsers also allow you block connections to sites.  I have to agree though, this on the local machine level is going to be a nightmare.
