A family member of mine gave me an old laptop to try and recover multiple old photos. This laptop is several years old and it's been formatted three or four times.

It depends on if the formatting took place before or after the photos were added. It also may be the photos are in one partition and the formatted drive may have been another partition so you would be ok in this scenario. You can only try it. If you can navigate to the drive & folder the photos are supposed to be in you may be able to recover them. Even if the folder is gone there is a slim, and very slim, chance you may still be able to recover them with an undelete tool. This will only work if there has not been a lot of drive read/writes that may have used the addressing space the photos were stored in.

While it is formatted, then almost impossible to recover old files/folders from this old laptop. There are several 3rd party tools/ software, that they claim these tools can help to recover, but in real scenario, they can not recover with full satisfaction. However, you can try, if that works.

It is quite difficult. But check, if, by any chance, the laptop was synced to any cloud account where those photos got automatically uplaoded.

I don't think it is possible. Unless you are using any paid tool. But even these tools might not be able to recover all files

As this is formatted 3/4 times, assuming a single person did it. If s/he is a responsible and computer savvy, this is thumb rule that, always keep personal files/ folders on another drive and format only C: drive or main drive.
