Can I create a remote desktop gateway without having bought a Windows server 2008? Can I enable this with a 2003 server or even a XP or 7 workstation? How does it work and how many 1 to 1 nats (public ips) do I really need? We have two currently one for the firewall and one for our exchange server.

You may enable the remote desktop web client on a web server and use that to logon to the desktops.
