Can I buy an IPv6 address? How does the purchasing process work? I heard that ARIN will give enterprises IPv6 addresses for free, but is this true and what are the conditions?

Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.

Hi

The place to go to for getting IPv6 addresses is your ISP. He will assign a block to you out of his range. For very large global companies in certain cases it is possible to get a block from ARIN directly, but only under certain conditions.

You should not really be paying for IP addresses, they should come with the service from your ISP. It's unethical to charge for them. Bear in mind that there are 2 types of IP addresses, PA and PI. PA (Provider Assigned) is the more common type a which is maintained by your ISP and given to you for the duration you take services from them. They will be able to give you IPv4 or 6 space. PI is slightly different and basically this is Provider Independent. This means that it belongs to your company and you can move it to whatever ISP you want or advertise it to multiple ISPs. You can only get PI under certain circumstances though and you have to demonstrate you actually need it. Silvia is correct about ARIN.......if you live in North America. I don't therefore I would approach RIPE being in Europe, the other RIRs are APNIC, AfriNIC and LACNIC.
