I recently read a paper writen by the CIO of Intel in which he seemed to imply that the standard warranty for servers is four years. Can anyone confirm this. Please Jim4522

I am unfamiliar with the article of which you speak, however I can offer some information about servers and server life.

A servers life is dependent on several factors:
heat
taxation
hardware
software

I would say that a server lasting 4 years sounds about right…with software and hardware going out of date frequently, 4 years almost seems like a long time. If the servers are not kept in the best conditions (correct temperature and humidity) their life can also be cut short.

Hope this helps!

We purchase our servers with a three year warranty at which point we work towards replacing the hardware with newer faster hardware. By the time year four roles around everything should be replaced.

We also replace our servers on a 4 year cycle, after the three year warranty runs out we add a one year extension, then start shopping for a new server. After 4 years, parts can be a challenge to find, and it has been my experience that you fix one thing and another breaks. As Schmidtw says, the environment plays a big part of the longevity and reliability of a system that is on 24/7/365

When you say that you purchase your server with three year warranty, does that mean that the standard warranty is one year and you purchase two additional years? I assume that there must be some defined length of the "standard" warranty. Could you explain further. I am not talking about what is the useful life of a server, just what its "standard" warranty is. Thanks Jim4522

I don't believe there is such a thing as an "Industry Standard Warranty", though individual manufacturers might have a "standard" for their products. General practice seems to indicate that the expected useful and reliable life of a server is generally around 4 years, based on a variety of factors mentioned in the answer above.
