When Outlook is configured with Cached Exchange Mode, is it viewing emails from the server? and when there's a disconnection, it reads from the .ost file? Or does it view emails from the .ost file and only communicates to the server to sync?
Thanks.

Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.

It is my understanding that when using cached mode, you are working from the OST file.Outlook checks with the server every 30 seconds for any changes, and, if any, the changes are transfered to the server or the local machine.

Based on experience and not techical knowledge, I would say that it is reading the .ost file even when connected. If you turn off Cached Exchange Mode, E-mail shows up in your inbox instantaniously, with it turned on, the inbox is loaded with a send/receive function one e-mail at a time.

As mentioned by stevesz, outlook has a constant connection to the ost and checks the exchange server during intervals for new mails, When cached mode is disabled you have got a constant connection to your exchange server and mails gets delivered instantly!

When we changed our settings to cached mode in the event that the connection to the exchange sever was lost, the customer was still able to work with Outlook. You are working with the .ost file and anything that you do will be held there, mainly when you hit send, until the connection can be re-established. Its much better this way than having Outlook shutting down every time you get a hic-cup from the exchange server and loss connection, even for five seconds.
