DrillO hit it on the nose. Unless every business unit in the company is on board with the design of the infrastructure, you will be rebuilding and wasting time on things that could have been done right the first time. Plan for the unexpected. Business groups will say "that's not what I asked for". Look for missing requirements before moving ahead. They will be laying in wait to cause undo tension and delays. And most of all, remember the credo of networks, KISS, keep is simple.

Ever hear of the top down business model, BADNT? Using the acronym properly can give you great results. Checking from the top down is simply check the Business, the Applications, the Data, the Netwrok, and then the technology. I have included a url for an article, Powerpoint, that has a description of how to create a business plan that applies to an inhouse or consulting type of Network http://faculty.kc.devry.edu/jmiers/NCM_264_midterm_notes-weeks_1___2.ppt

Exactly HOW fast, HOW reliable, HOW secure? How much is the customer willing to spend? Internet Access?? WebSite? VPN?

There is no textbook solution what may be good for family lan may not be good enough for CIA/NSA Lan...

What are the clients using? How much network activity is expected? Are we talking 100 Video Artists or 100 Office Users?

How far are they seperated geographically? What is the expected growth in the network?

I do not know of any single such guide. When your talking about building a network infrastructure from ground zero you are talking about incorporating many disciplines such as; Systems Admin, Network Admin, Network Engineer, Security Admin/Engineer.
I have worked in the IT field for many years as a Network Admin and brought all of these disciplines together in one form or another, and I did not find information in an single source, but many. The previous post definitely outlined the very beginning steps in make the project happen, with out the support of management and the green backs to fund, the project is doomed to failure or ill implementation.

Here are some links that I can think of on the web were you can find info.

There are of course many MANY more.
