Answer Wiki:
We use a special control group in BRMS to take an unattended System Backup. One of the exits in the controlgroup will request the Dedicated system (or restricted state) . A exit CL program takes care of ending all activity in a controlled manner. After issuing the ENDSBS *ALL or ENDSYS command it will monitor the QSYSOPR queue for the "System Ended to restricted state" message MSGW: RCVMSG MSGQ(QSYSOPR) WAIT(*MAX) RMV(*NO) MSGID(&MSGID) IF COND(&MSGID *NE 'CPF0968') THEN(GOTO + CMDLBL(MSGW)) and proceed with the savsys. You can use either the BRMS console function (option 20 on initial BRMS menu) started on the Console or the Jobq in the QCTL subsystem. When using the Jobq you must make sure that there is a timeout specified otherwise your entire system could be hanging in case something goes wrong with your backup.
