Answer Wiki:
if that tape is added to BRMS database remove that. then INZTAP in native not through BRMS. before firing backup take DSPTAP and make sure no data is there. then move the tape to drive. then fire the backup.

What does the second-level text on the error message indicate?

The message suggests to me that the volume in question is not expired in BRMS.

Not familiar with BRMS, so I can’t tell you much about that.  What messages are generated when you try INZTAP?

my 3570 tape drive doesn’t give me the option (*SL) to INZ tapes.
my work around was to use WRKRPYLE and repond to the error message
(CPA4058) with INZ, it works for me.  tapes only need be INZ’d once.
don’t know if this will help you.

According to the documentation using NEWVOL(*CTGID) with the INZTAP command should initialise the tape to standard label.  I’d still like to see the second-level messages generated by your use of the INZTAP command, but if your current setup works to your satisfaction I can see why you wouldn’t want to bother.
