 Brightmail gateway compliance failure
PDF files are occasionally getting stripped from email with failure of "Executable file detected." Does this always mean there are hidden .exe files? What would be some of the other reasons for this failure? Thanks. Moderator Note: This is a submitted question

Answer Wiki:
Viruses can be spread in executables located within pdf files. Do you know the person who sent them? Do you know for sure they would not have contained a virus? If you do not know the sender then the stripping of thqat pdf is probably a good thing. Sounds like the email security is blocking pdf's in which it detects executables.

I get this a lot when sending PDFs to people. I think it’s the binary aspect of the PDFs (especially if they’re encrypted) that are triggering malware controls. The simplest solution would be to allow PDFs as attachments but I know there are some paranoid admins that just won’t have any part of that.
