Do I need a BES in order to access my exchange server through my blackberry?

If you are talking about over-the-air access, yes. However without a BES you can still synchronize by the desktop application which requires you connect your bb to your computer by usb cord. You can also connect to your OWA page on your blackberry unless it is being blocked by the exchange administrator.
