We are using KBM software for our ERP system. We have a mandate to build a data warehouse so we can use a good BI tool to extract data. We would like to run this on our AS400. Does anyone have suggestions as to a good product for us to investigate?

Software/Hardware used:
iSeries, V7R1

Can you post general specs? How many processors and LPARs? How much memory? How much DASD and how many arms? What DB2 options are installed? -- Tom

TomThanks for the questions. In this case there are not relavent because we are being given the edict that "This will be done". Thus I am looking for a good software product. Once it is found, we will then get whatever hardware is necessary to make it run properly.

We have enjoyed great success and user acceptance of Diver from Dimensional Insight.  It has saved us many, many hours of programming reports.  Our users love it.  It is very easy to use.  The data warehouse is developed 100% on the i5 and stored on the IFS.  Users run software on their PC to access the "models" which is Dimensional Insight's term for their warehouse. Access is quick and intuitive. I would be happy to give you more details if you are interested.

Thanks WoodHow long did it take you to develop your Data Warehouse on the IFS?  And how large is it? #files, #records? We would prefer a tool that works directly with the AS400 DB and not hat to be transferring data to the IFS.

Hello Charlie Brown:  It took me eight hours to build our first warehouse, starting with no knowledge of DI (Dimensional Insight). DI works directly with the AS/400 DB using SQL to bring data into the program which builds the warehouse.  In some cases we use RPG to build a flat file and in other cases we construct the data using SQL.  In the case of a flat file we just "select * from file" to launch the build. Because this runs native on the AS/400 you have all the '400 tools at your disposal to develop data to feed DI.  The results reside on the IFS because the users run a PC-based program called Diver to access the data. Complexity of the model dictates the size.  One model we built last night is based on 70k records.  Model is 23,390 KB.  This may seem rather large but be aware that when the model is built all the combinations of relationships between data are prepared.  This results in quick access to data for your users.  DI built the model in 2 minutes 57 seconds. We build 45 - 50 models every night, launching the builds from the AS/400 job scheduler. This product is huge in the wine and spirits industry where customers build models over files with a million or more records. Our users love the product.  We use it in almost every aspect of the business - AP, AR, GL, PR, HR, time cards, sales, inventory and more.    Our only association with Dimensional Insight is as a satisfied customer.
