I'm looking to replace Windows XP client that's used only for web applications & mail with Linux/Ubunutu virtual desktop using a thin client or old PC. I'd like to have failover and balancing capability and a simple UI. Any suggestions?

If I am not wrong, it is better to replace Microsoft Terminal Server. The hidden thing is there,
get a virtual IP and u can tie it to a local DNS name and it helps to connect to the clients. After that, it is possible to connect with VNC or something like type of remote desktop solution to connect to the server.
Though, There are plenty of tools available for creating virtual machines and servers. These OS Emulation tools comes handy for testing software without investing in a large and expensive hardware. Rather u may use Virtual Box for instant solution. it is one of the most popular virtualization solutions for Linux / Windows.
Thanks–
Have you looked into the Linux Terminal Server Project?
