 Best platform for domino/lotus ?
I currently am running domino 7.0.3 on an IBM iseries 520 system, and it is a resource hog. Since we ue this box for other applications - we want to migrate our domino and sametime to another dedicated box. Is Linux the way to go, what is the best hardware and software solution to run Lotus 8.5 on these days ? I have several domino server instances and sametime as well.

Software/Hardware used:
currently IBM 9406-520 multi partition'ed box with HMC

Answer Wiki:
The best hardware for Domino is still the POWER SYSTEMS with i5OS. I do believe you can get the 520 Power 6+ hardware as cheap as an intel machine or a soon to be annnounced POWER 7 version (Watch for the announcement of the new small series machine on August 17th from IBM) and if you are using the Domino application on it and do not need the full i5OS with the database, I believe IBM has a greatly discounted i5OS license for application use only. As Domino has it's own database called .NSF which all reside in the IFS, I believe it qualifies for a sharp discount. This way you keep the Domino applications on the i platform that you know and love but free up the current full feaured database for other applications. This is a new offering by IBM which was just announced by IBM and detailed in the IT Jungle website by Timothy Pickens Morgan. Lovemyi

Likewise, we’ve been on various i machines for several years and have been very happy (came up on 6.5, now on 8.5 on a 550). We have an LPAR dedicated to Domino, so we didn’t mix it with other application loads, which probably simplifies some of the potential problems. We did set up remote db connections to an RPG/Java/DB2 application running in another LPAR to do patient lookups. We have several Domino servers, plus Sametime, Quickr, and until recently Fax, all running in the same LPAR. The only intel Domino we have left is for Blackberry.

We had a short stint of running our public website on Domino 8.5 on RedHat Linux on intel. It ran well but we redesigned onto Portal & WCM before we built sufficient history to judge fairly. I also have to admit a lack of Linux expertise so things that might have been simpler for others was a bit of a slog for me.

Obviously, your mileage may vary but it may be that effort spent tuning the i partition for the Domino workload will pay back with a very stable platform.

Good luck, regardless of your path.
