Hello, I am looking for a basic set of tools to load on a laptop for network/lan analysis. Can you recommend a package that will be cost effective? Thank you

Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.

What do you mean by network/lan analysis? Do you need to sniff the net, evaluate traffic, or look over the health of the entire net?
We use ethereal for sniffing, ntop to evaluate where traffic is going, and MRTG to watch overall traffic volumes. We also use HP management software to watch the status of our switches. Except for the HP software, each of these was free and came with the linux distribution.

First off - since you're looking for "cost effective", visit www.insecure.org (Home of Nmap) (Now also www.sectools.org), and look at their recommended list. This is a really good place to start. For some of the tools, you may need to set up your laptop for dual boot since some of the best tools run under *nix For me to list all my favorite tools would take more time than I want to spend...but then, I AM a tool fiend/junkie. Somewhat on the costly side though, is the SolarWinds toolset from solarwinds.net. If you want more info, contact me directly. Bob
