We just upgraded our cold storage facilites from Symbol PDT6840 guns over 10 years old to the new Symbol MC 9090G series. Symbol/Motorola are the leaders in this field in my opinion. We also have a few Intermec guns mixed in.
You will really need to start looking into the middleware that is going to get your application to the scan gun and the data from the scan gun to the database. There are several out there, google RFGEN, Datamax, Ryzex, Wavelink. All are very good vendors and I have used all in the past and plan on using them in the future. Good luck and I hope this helps you out.
You can do this in somewhat real time with access points, and connections from the scan gun to the database, you don’t have to batch these files if you dont want to. Again keep researching, there are alot of ways to do many things.

I cannot speak with experience about Symbol or Intermex scanners–they are probably fine quality. We sell a lot of Honeywell scanners and the 4600G sends the data right into a word or text document–no special software required. It souds like this may be a very simple way to do what you want. The User Guide includes symbols you can scan to program the scanner to add a carriage-return or line feed after each scan, if you want. Not very expensive, very rugged and simple to contifure. USB connection, no external power supply needed. You can get a price at our website if you <a href="http://want--www.fotel.com" title="http://want--www.fotel.
