Hello guys, I need your help because just this week our backup on DLT tape drive were very slow. Supposed to be our backup transfer rate will not be less than 300 mb/ min but we only have 60 + mb/ min just this week. Our one copy backup will normally consume 10-12 hours but this past few days we have consume 24 hours +, its for our 1st copy only. Guys what seem to be the problem? Im trying to isolate the problem but still i could not really pin point the cause of it. I already cleaned up files but the result still the same. Our backup from the server itself then through the network and to the tape drive. Hope you could help on this. Thanks a lot,

Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.

Is your DLT connected directly to the server via scsi? What speed is the scsi? You said the files are coming down over the network – what is the speed of the nic?

One of these factors is slowing you down. If the DLT is connected directly to the server where the files are to be backed up from what is your throughput there?

Another thing to look at it what’s the disk queueing look like on the source drive? If the source drive can’t handle the data transfer speed then the backups will slow down.

I would also suggest checking your anti-virus. Maybe something has changed with it like a whole-disk scan during the backup period.

Are you trying to backup exchange? If so, you probably have your exchange directory tagged as well as using an exchange agent. This has caused the exact same type of slowdown for some of our clients. You should just be using your exchange agent to backup the exchange databases.
