Q:
Backup of encrypted data to USB device
I'm using Ultimaco encryption software and I'm looking for any software/utility that can read files from an encrypted hard drive and copy the data to a USB device. I need to be able to do this for OS disaster recovery in the event of a crash. Any suggestions or recommendations are appreciated. Thank you.

Hmm don't know the Ultimaco encryption software but you can try this. Boot the computer with the encrypted files with ERD Commander which will boot into a GUI "Windows Explorer" like interface and you can copy the files to the USB and network if needed.

Are you just copying the encrypted “volume” or copying individual files? Can the Ultimaco software read another copy of the data from a different physical location or does the Ultimaco software write some information in a hidden disk area? Have you looked for any information on the Ultimaco (Sophos) website or any Sophos support forums?

Are you using SafeGuard EZ? If so, there is no way to access the information on a hard drive without the proper password (login password). The entire drive (or partition if that’s the way you set it up) is encrypted. Although ypou might be able to see file(s) using ERD commander, you will not be able to access them without the proper decryption key.
