I'm trying to backup my MySQL database with this command:
mysqldump -u root -p db_name > path to store
It brings me to the password prompt. I add in my password but then it brings me right back to CMD. Why does this keep happening.

Have you tried this one like this way:

mysqldump -u user_name –ppassword database_name > dump_file.sql and press enter key. Here, user name means valid user name (generally it is root), password means password for the same user(don't put space in between p and password), database_name means, valid/exist database name & dump_file.sql means target file name with .SQL extension. Please link here from MySQL support, https://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.7/en/mysqldump.html
