There are RAID backup utilities available you may want to take a look at specifically designed for this. The other thing to consider is how much data are you looking to back up. Also the data transfer speed to back up to the external drive, this can be a slow process and you need to consider the down time.

It depends on what you want to back up to. Are you looking to use another hard disk outside of the RAID array or external media or possibly the cloud? Are you looking to do an system image backup or just specific folders and files?

Looking to do a system image back up and make sure that it works entirely. I would do it on 3 hard drives for the swap and also on one external drive.
