All  most all SoftWares use the same extension and location is generally C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Local Settings\Temp, u can change this location by selecting Tools > Options > click files tab and click automatic save …… option !
In ACAD 2006 and higher version u can use Drawing Recovery Manager to recover .bak file.
