Auto-trimming issue in SQL Server 2008

I have a weird problem. Why in the the following SQL query does print 'equal' when run against SQL Server 2008. The database compatibility level is set to 100.

if '' = ' '
    print 'equal'
else
    print 'not equal'

And this returns 0:

select (LEN(' '))

I think its auto trimming in space. Anyone know if I’m right – and if so or not, how to alleviate the problem?
