In our company, the IT department set some policies to be able to control accessing inappropriate sites and other illegal sites. As an auditor, are we exempt from their policies because even accessing Yahoo mail is banned? There are times we need to research needed by the Top Management but we couldn't do it because they banned it. Is there any solution? Is there a policies exempting auditors?

Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.

There’s no legal exemption for auditors that I know of. This is completely up to the management in your own organization. Can you not ask for an exemption? IT shouldn’t be driving/controlling/enforcing security policies anyway. This is a business issue that management needs to be involved in as well.

Here are some of my deeper thoughts on security policies. Also, check out this piece I wrote about how to get management on your side. Don’t forget to bring up some of the points I make in this piece regarding balancing security and business needs.

Good luck!
