Q:
ATA vs ACHI Mode vs Flash Cache Module DELL Inspiron
This is the famous little setting that is normally done on a laptop or dekstop. ATA Mode for Windows XP and ACHI Mode for WIndows Vista. Well, bless those modes, i had to use ATA mode for the setup in my new Dell Inspiron with Vista Business otherwise, i will see bluescreen almost 2-3 times a week with ACHI mode. And the default setting for flash cache module is set as enabled. Guess what, i had to disable it. And till today, no blue screen. Perhaps someone have any idea, hw this can happen. It was just a WILD GUESS and it saved my life. I did highlight this to Dell Support and the guy kinda went blur. So i guess its a litte secret or "mishap" on Dell machines.

You have to enable the AHCI driver in Vista no matter what the Bios settings says. I use a 256mb flash drive and downloaded the 64bit basic drivers from the intel website on reinstall. If you add the driver at install you will never see a blue screen as a result of this missing driver. If you have already installed Vista there are several articles on how to change th registry to use the AHCI drivers by default vs. the ATA
