Q:
ASCII to EBCDIC and Decryption on mainframe Z/OS
This is done on a mainfrain Z/OS. The the file is encrypted and ASCII. Step one un-encrypts the file creating a dataset that is 73,994 blocks in size or roughly 2,311 Megabytes. Because we don't know the real record size the ASCII to EBCDIC step is done by specifingy the output record size as 32K. Megacrypt is padding each record with 32K of hex zeros when they are probably 400 bytes. After the ASC to EBC conversion the dataset is 20,330,293 blocks or 635,165 Megabytes an increase of about 275 times the amount of data. The encryption step takes 3 minutes 13 seconds, the ASC-EBC step takes almost 5 hours. Can anyone suggest another product? PatMac

There are a number of vendors providing Encryption services for the OS/390 and z/OS system. We have used MegaCryption by ASPG with good result. We did not notice any significant degradation of services.
One nice option MegaCryption provides is that encrypted data can be sent to a third party & they can un-encrypt the data with the key provided by you (this way they do not need to buy the product). They can not encrypt new data nor can they un-encrypt without the key provided by you. This is a handy option under certain situations. I am sure there are other vendors that may provide similar services.
