 AS/400 Upgrade
Hello, Our customer have a i550 box with a V5R3 running on it. We are planning to upgrade both the Hardware as well as the OS as well as the disk towers have consumed huge space. Not sure which one to proceed first as we thought that upgrading the hardware & then OS will be better, but customer suggested to go the otherway around considering the funds. Could anyone suggest. Thanks in advance. Note : We also have a couple of 825 boxes which are for dev and testing.

Answer Wiki:
If you are going to upgrade to any of the new models of iSeries you will HAVE TO UPGRADE THE OS FIRST. Most of the new hardware such as the MMA will not run on any release earlier than V5R4M5 If your 500 has small disk in a large number of racks, you should recover some of the upgrade cost in Maintenance saving with fewer towers. BTW the 5.3 to 5.4 upgrade has been relatively painless, and V5R3 is no longer supported after the end of April.

Hi,

You should probably check to see whether all of your current hardware is supported by the new release before you upgrade. I seem to remember that certain (older) tape drives aren’t supported anymore.

Your IBM representative should be able to check this for you.

Martin Gilbert.
