AS400 system password

I'm hoping someone will have a brilliant answer to this.

We have an ageing 720 system running V5R1M0.  This is now end of life and is being replaced with a 520.

However we have another use for the 720, namely as a DR box running V4R5M0 for another 720.

I'm aware that 'downgrading' to an older release may invoke the System Password - as this has long since been lost this could cause problems in a scratch install.

Anyone know how to get around this hurdle?

Software/Hardware used:
OS/400 V5R1M0 model 720.

Mandraxas,

Straight from the Info Center;
To bypass the system password during the first IPL, follow these steps:

Select option 2 (Bypass the system password) on the Verification of System Password Failed display.
Read the information about the Bypass the System Password display. Remember to contact your marketing representative immediately to obtain the system password before the bypass period runs out.
Press F9 (Bypass) to continue the IPL.
When the IPL has finished, you will receive hourly messages that tell how much time is left in the bypass period.

When you receive the password, you can enter it by following these steps:

Perform an attended IPL and select option 1 (Change the system password) on the Verification of System Password Failed display.
Perform an attended IPL and select option 1 (Change the system password) on the Bypass Period has Ended display.

Hope this helps,
Bill Poulin

You must ensure that a system password can be obtained from IBM. You can 'bypass' the initial entry of the system password, but that might be no help to you if a system password is not available at all. For V4R5, you might have a lengthy process ahead of you, so get started now. AFAIK, the only 'workaround' is a periodic scratch install. This, of course, would simply start the bypass period again and can be pretty inconvenient. The last time I went through a similar process was maybe four years ago on an older model 400 working with V4R5 and V5R1. At that time, the system password wasn't too hard to dig out of IBM. However, the "SUID" was almost impossible. It took a number of contacts before finding someone who even knew what it was. I suspect that 720s no longer need a SUID code. Your very next step should be to contact IBM and get the request in motion. That will tell you something about any obstacles you need to plan for. Tom
