 AS400 – From a HP LJ 1300 to a HP LJ P1505
I just replaced a Locally attached HP 1300 laserjet with a HP 1505 Laserjet I series printer. The printer will print "Print Screens" but will not print our decals(??) I release the spool file, it goes back to a *SAV status but it will not print to the new printer. I have made sure the I series name is correct for the printer and the printer session is correct.....The Iseries printer type is a 3812 and the manufacturer type and model is a "*HP5". The new printer has only 2 mbytes where the 1300 had 16MB...could this be the issue?? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Answer Wiki:
I believe the 1300 was IPDS capable and you may need IPDS for your printing. Not sure about the 1505

We have an HP 1505 attached to our AS/400 using an output queue only (no device description) with an IP address. MFRTYPMDL is *HP5 on the output queue description.
The lesser memory should not be a problem. Our 1505 just has the standard memory.
This is a vanilla (no IPDS) HP 1505n so it should work just the same on your machine.

Yes, memory will be an issue.

You could try reducing the resolution of the images to reduce their sizes.

Or, just buy another 8 mb of memory

We recently purchased a HP P1505n (didn’t do our homework ) and after creating a queue it prints a page from the 400 after about 3 minutes, followed by a page with some garbage on it before moving to the next spool file. I actually think the page of garbage is what is taking it so long to complete printing. I checked and it has 32Mb of memory, can’t take any more per HP, and I had a co-worker chat with HP Support who said it will be slow on the 400 because of the limited memory. Has anyone had real success with this printer? Thanks.

We have a 1505 attached to our iSeries. We had the exact same problem until we re-configured using a device description instead of just an output queue. If you care to post your e-mail address I’d be happy to send you a listing of the config specs we used.

By the way, it is just the vanilla version of the 1505 – no extra memory or special network cards.

Woodengineer – We are having a similar issue with our 1505. It is set up as a 3812 page printer but it prints an additional page for each page with”dPlain” on the top and nothing else until it prints the next page. My e-mail is bruce.battersby@sensient-tech.net. Could you send me the configuration you are using? We have it defined currently as an HP4000 in the config with a custom workstation object of HP4000CSL in QGPL and the system driver program is *HPPLJDRV. This was a copy of another printer configuration for a Laserjet P3005 which works fine.

Any help you can provide us is appreciated.

Woodsengineer – my email address is duhler@eastern-ind.com. We have the P1505n – network model, which is why we went with the outque only configuration. I’ll look forward to your config to see if we can get it working.

By the way, we contacted HP again and they suggest buying a Blue Kit, here’s the link:
http://www.mpitech.com/mpitech.nsf/pages/bluekit_en.html . It will allow IPDS printing and I believe the box you get will also contain some memory which alleviates some of the slowness issues, though I’m not positive. We have a similar box from iData (it is old) that we use with an HP 4200.

WoodEngineer, thanks very much for the DEVD. It works flawlessly. Our controller is very pleased, which makes my life easier. Thanks again.

To LoveMyi – I tried to send the info but the e-mail was bounced back several times. I even copied and pasted the e-mail address. Could you confirm.

WoodEngineer,

Sorry, the e-mail is incorrect. My mistake, it should be .com not .net.

bruce.battersby@sensient-tech.com
bbattersby@wi.rr.com

I also have included another e-mail if the work e-mail does not go through.

Thanks again for your help.

The HP 1300 has uses PCL (Printer Control Language) but the HP 1505 does not. We do not allow users to print to HP printers unless they have PCL because most of the time it will not work. However, you could try changing the Manufactuer type and model to *HP4 or turn off Host print transform. If it still doesn’t work then you’ll need an HP printer with PCL (our standard).

Hello 5pack,

Device description is on its way.

By the way, according to IBM tech doc 21800146, the 1505n uses “HP PCL5e” data stream. Same doc says “MFRTYPMDL for HPT” should be either *LEXOPTRAT or *HP5.

 5,525 pts.

WoodEngineer, Yes, the 1505n has PCL but as you can see from that document the 1505 does not.

Hi WoodEngineer – can I add my email address to the list of people after the DEVD that you use for the 1505? My email is andrew.smith@navnorth.co.uk
I’ve tried numerous configurations, and it has been working perfectly so far, but I am an infrequent printer so never really noticed the additional pages.
Now we have people actually using the printer in anger, it has become more of an issue.

Many thanks in advance

Andrew

sounds like WoodEngineer needs to write this up and send it to ITKE so they can post it somewhere

Good idea, BigKat.
How do we post something?
Its a PDF output of the DEVD.

I would set the Host print transform to *yes and the manufacturer make to either a *LEXOPTRAT or *HP5

WoodEngineer,

Could you please send me the specs for the LaserJet 1505n setup?

livery53804@mypacks.net

It’s new. Its setup as an outq only, and we are using *HP5 for MFRTYPMDL. Our problem is that it is printing the job separator page, even though the Separator Page SEPPAGE=NO, and Job Separator JOBSEP=0.

Couldn’t you just use a code block and copy and paste it to this page?

This is the DEVD of an HP1505n on our i Series running V5R4. The workstation customizing object is not required to implement this config. We use it on many printers to get larger print when output is reduced to fit 8 1/2 x 11 paper.

The address of this printer is defined in TCP/IP Host Table Entries (GO CFGTCP, Option 10)
